 Student Speaker Contest

The Gridley Lions Club holds its annual student speaker contest in February. Here are some photo's that were made during and after the one of the contests.

The topic for the Student Speakers Contest of 2002 was "Energy, what's the future". This was certainly an interesting and contemporary topic to discuss; Both Annie Harshbarger and Amanda Urbanski did a magnificent job discussing the future of energy in the United States. In the end Amanda Urbanski was able to get away with just a couple of extra points and with title of winner of the 2002 Gridley Lions Club Student Speakers Contest. She will be representing Gridley at the Zone contest and undoubtedly also at the next levels of the competition.

The Contest is organized by the respective local Lions clubs and after a winner has been declared at the local level, the contest continues at the zone level (the winners of approximately 4 clubs). The next level is the Regional level, and the top contestants from there get to meet     each other during the District Conference of District       4C1. By that time the contestants have left some 200 to 300 others behind them!

The Speech Contests would not be possible without the efforts of judges. These judges have the pleasure of listening to some very interesting speeches, but then have the very difficult task of comparing the work of usually quite talented speakers. They are assisted in their task by Lions Club time keepers, score counters, and other helpers.

Make it a point to come and listen to the speakers during the next levels of the contest; you will be pleasantly surprised! And while you are making plans, please do not forget the Junior Student Speaker Contest which is sponsored by the Gridley Lioness Club. This contest features Junior High School Students contesting each other.
