Bikes
'n Birds on
Saturday April 4th, 2009!
The Bikes
‘n Birds tour is a bicycle ride through the beautiful Gray Lodge
Wildlife Area. The tour leads through the beautiful wetlands of the wildlife
area and is on paved and hard compacted gravel and dirt. There is no speed
component to the tour and participants are encouraged to stop often and view the
environment.
The tour is
a self-directed ride through the area with several rest stops. At the rest stops
Lions Club Volunteers are available to give wildlife interpretation and to
answer questions. In addition, there is water and some food available at these
stops, and a telephone to reach the Gridley Lions Bike
Patrol (for tire repairs, First Aid, etc.)
Participants
have a choice from two rides. The short ride is a ride of approximately 8 miles
and is mostly on paved roads. The longer tour is around 20 miles and is mostly
on packed dirt and gravel. Especially for the long ride we recommend that you
bring a sturdy Mountain Bike. Neither tour is particularly strenuous, but we
don’t recommend the long tour if you haven’t used a bicycle for a few years.
Directions
to the starting point:
The tours
start at the entrance to the Gray Lodge Wildlife area on Pennington Road. You
can reach this entrance by taking Sycamore Street westbound from Highway 99 in
Gridley. Sycamore Street turns into Colusa Highway; the Pennington Road
intersection is approximately 6 miles west of Gridley. The entrance to the
Wildlife Area is approximately 3 miles south on Pennington Road. There are
several road signs, making it easier to find the entrance.

You can
start the tour at any time between 8:30 and 10:00 AM. The checkpoints are manned
until 12:30 PM. If you plan to take some detours, you are quite welcome to do
so, but please let us know at one of the checkpoints so that we don’t start
looking for you. We require that all riders 13 years and younger need to be
accompanied by an adult at all times. We require that all riders wear a
helmet.
Cost and
Proceeds:
The cost of
the tour this year is $ 15.00 a person. If you come with more than 2 persons
from the same family we will not charge you more than $ 30.00. Special
commemorative T-shirts are available at $ 12.50 (please note that they are not
included in the cost of the ride!). We will have some simple lunch
food available at the Check-in Station at the Wildlife Area entrance (hotdogs,
etc.).
The
proceeds of these tours will go to Community projects of the Gridley Lions Club.
These projects include Graffiti removal, Youth vision projects (such as the
purchase of glasses for children who cannot afford them and yearly eye screening
for all children in the Gridley area), and other community projects. The Gridley
Lions Club also contributes to regional, national, and international Lions Club
projects, such as the City of Hope, Eye Hospitals (with free care for anyone who
needs it), and an International disaster fund.
